SynBio Africa's International Synthetic Biology and Biosecurity Conference in Africa

[SynBio Africa Conference]

SynBio Africa hosts the International Synthetic Biology and Biosecurity Conference in Africa series, which brings stakeholders together to discuss the policy frameworks required in adopting synthetic biology innovations in Africa. The conference covers a wide range of key areas in synthetic biology, including: material science, biosecurity, biosafety, bioinformatics, and more. SBA.3 International Synthetic Biology and Biosecurity Conference in Africa will be held in July 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya.

SUMMARY

The International Synthetic Biology and Biosecurity Conference in Africa, hosted by SynBio Africa is a conference that convenes stakeholders to discuss the legal frameworks required for the successful adoption of synthetic biology technologies in Africa. The inaugural conference, in 2021, was the first international synthetic biology and biosecurity conference ever hosted in Africa. For the first two years, the conference was held in Kampala, Uganda. The third iteration of the conference, SBA.3 International Synthetic Biology and Biosecurity Conference in Africa, will be held in July 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya.

SynBio hopes that the conference will foster a shared public understanding of the opportunities and benefits associated with emerging synthetic biology technologies. The following areas of synthetic biology have been covered at previous conferences:

  • Agricultural innovations
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Bioinformatics and data science
  • Biosafety and biosecurity
  • Biosensors and diagnostic technology
  • Materials and biomaterial science
  • One Health
  • Renewable energy and biofuels

SynBio Africa is a group of African scientists, programmers, and other professionals based in Uganda. The group aims to advance synthetic biology research in Africa with a focus on creating sustainable and low-cost solutions to challenges in health, agriculture, and the environment. It was founded as an After iGEM initiative in early 2018.
