[Biosafety & Biosecurity Handbook]

The Youth for Biosecurity 2021 and 2022 Cohort in Nigeria developed a handbook to educate secondary school students on biosecurity and biosafety, aiming to promote safe and responsible scientific practices. This initiative is supported by the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs and the European Union.

SUMMARY

the Youth for Biosecurity 2021 and 2022 Cohort in Nigeria has produced a Biosafety and Biosecurity handbook aimed at secondary school students. The handbook introduces the concepts of biosecurity and biosafety, offers guidelines and best practices, and fosters a culture of responsibility in handling biological materials in school laboratories. This initiative is supported by the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs and the Biological Weapon Convention Implementation Support Unit, with additional backing from the European Union. The handbook seeks to make a significant impact at the national level by promoting informed and responsible scientific practices among young students.

Specifically, the handbook provides an age-appropriate introduction to biosafety and biosecurity. In addition to describing the components of each field (and subfields like lab biosecurity and farm biosecurity), the handbook also teaches basic laboratory practices, discusses the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment, and outlines key international governance initiatives in the space (e.g., the BWC, One Health, etc.) Overall, the handbook is a comprehensive resource for the next generation of scientists.
