This textbook describes biosecurity practices that can be applied outside of the laboratory to larger efforts in international threat reduction and biological risk management. It focuses on issues at the intersection of public health, international security, and developing technologies, especially dual-use technologies like synthetic biology. The author argues that there is a need for biosecurity professionals skilled in both the biological sciences and threat management techniques, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. This textbook proposes criteria for credentialing such biosecurity professionals. It also defines a discrete biothreat assessment process, describes applied biosecurity practices and principles, and ultimately aims to bridge the gap between biosafety and security professionals.
