CBS Biosafety App

[CBS App]
Government of Canada (Canada)

The CBS Biosafety App allows a user to view specific containment requirements for a facility. App users are able to interact with the Canadian Biosafety Standards (CBS) by sorting through biosecurity-related requirements and saving progress and lists for different locations in a facility. It is available as a free download for Android and Apple and it can also be accessed as an online version.

SUMMARY

The CBS Biosafety App allows users to engage with Canadian Biosafety Standards (CBS) through finding and interacting with the specific containment requirements for a facility. Users are able to view biosecurity-related requirements given the app incorporates all information from the CBS second edition. The app includes a full-text view of the CBS and allows users to save requirements, progress, and lists for different locations in a laboratory based on containment level, work area, and pathogen type. Locations may include work areas, large scale production areas, or small or large animal containment zones. The app also guides users to add comments where requirements are displayed and check boxes for verified requirements.

The app is available as a free download in English for Android and Apple and it can also be accessed as an online version. Updates may be released in the future as additional guidance is incorporated into the app. The CBS, created by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), is used to certify the compliance of regulated facilities with a licence for controlled activities with human pathogens and toxins or importing or transferring terrestrial animal pathogens. The standards and guidelines are part of a larger suite of biosafety and biosecurity resources maintained by the Canadian Centre for Biosecurity in collaboration with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Health Canada and Public Health Agency of Canada. The Centre has 4 offices that focus on biosecurity: 1. Office of Biosafety Programs and Planning (OBPP), 2. Office of Biosafety and Biocontainment Operations (OBBO), 3. Office of Pathogen Security (OPS), 4. Office of Stakeholder Engagement and Regulatory Affairs (OSERA).
