Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Global Biosafety & Biosecurity: Practical Interventions and Measuring Progress Implementation Tool
[DEI in Biosafety Implementation Tool]
The DEI in Biosafety Implementation tool aims to build awareness around diversity in the workforce and empower organizations to prioritize initiatives that facilitate equitable access to information, enable meaningful participation from all workers, and increase inclusion within and across biosafety and biosecurity organizations.
SUMMARY
The International Federation of Biosafety Association (IFBA) created the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Global Biosafety & Biosecurity Implementation Tool for all organizations operating in biosafety and biosecurity. The objective of the resource is to outline practical policies and interventions that organizations can adopt to better facilitate DEI within the workplace, which is important for building a stronger sense of community to take responsibility for reducing biological risks and supporting innovation.
The tool outlines specific actions that organizations can take along seven thematic clusters, including: 1) Equitable access to information; 2) Meaningful participation and diverse perspectives; 3) Providing accommodations; 4) Increasing diversity in recruitment and retention; 5) Organizational commitment to DEI; 6) DEI in marketing and communication materials; and 7) Accessible training and professional development opportunities for diverse audiences. Each of these clusters also has a set of recommended actions (38 in total) and indicators that organizations can use to benchmark their performance and assess progress on DEI interventions.
The Implementation Tool is geared toward workplace leaders and is meant to help organizations develop a mature, long-term DEI strategy. It is meant to be broadly applicable to the biosafety and biosecurity professional community.
